Kitty Raises Hell by Carrie Vaughn

kitty-raises-hellBeware to readers who have not read any previous Kitty books, this review is inherently going to contain spoilers.  I try my hardest to not put spoilers into my reviews but, sometimes, it cannot be avoided.  You have been warned.

The sixth book in the Kitty series starts hot on the heels of the recently released Kitty and the Dead Man’s Hand.  Since Kitty and the Dead Man’s Hand left on a plot hanger, we are lucky this installment immediately starts with the actions of the last page of the previous book.

Kitty, a werewolf who has her own radio show, was recently in Las Vegas.  As with anything Kitty does, she seems to get in trouble.  In the previous book and while Kitty was in Las Vegas, she got involved with a cult of wereleopards that worship an old vampire.  Unfortunately, Kitty angers this old vampire and the cult.

Fast forward to this book:  something is haunting Kitty and threatening her and her loved ones.  Since Kitty thinks it is a ghost with ties to the cult in Las Vegas, she pulls in the help of some ghost hunters.  Quickly, Kitty and the ghost hunters realize they are over their head in something bigger than they all imagined.

Kitty Raises Hell is a page turner.  The pacing is perfect.  The intrigue is perfect.  I was drawn into the book, wanting to know what happens, especially since things with Kitty always seem to get more complicated.  We meet new characters that will probably be making more appearances in later books.  Also, the readers are reminded of events from the first Kitty book, pulling this entire series together into one, large epic tale.

The only fault I have with Kitty Raises Hell, and the entire series as a whole, is I have yet to become completely emotionally tied to Kitty and her entourage.  If a main character died, I do not think I would be too upset.  Of course, I am completely too emotionally tied to way too many characters!  In all honestly, this is a small fault because the Kitty series is good, really good.  My need of emotional attachment to characters is my own neurosis coming to the surface.

The bottom line is Kitty Raises Hell is fantastic.  The Kitty series keeps getting better and better.  I want to know what happens with Kitty next.  Unfortunately, we have to wait for another year.
