Angels’ Blood by Nalini Singh

angels-bloodSet in an alternative reality, archangels run the world with an iron fist.  Interestingly, minions of the angels are vampires, whom the angels make.  When a minion goes astray, the angels hire the Guild Hunters who capture and return the missing vampire minion.  Some of these hunters, like Elena, are naturally able to sense vampires, setting them ahead of other hunters.  Elena has the reputation of being the best.  Unfortunately, her reputation gets her hired by the archangel Raphael, the leader of New York.  Scared of her new assignment but not one to let fear control her actions, she takes up Raphael on this job knowing she will probably not survive.

Honestly, I was a bit weary when I started this book.  Most stories involving angels are rather religious, something I try to stay away from in fiction novels.  Angels’ Blood was completely different:  the angels are not “make love, not war”.  On the other hand, these angels are deeply flawed, cold hearted, and out of touch with humans.  Therefore, the world in Angels’ Blood is immediately interesting, creative, and much darker than I expected.

Raphael and Elena have an intriguing relationship, especially since Elena can’t keep her big mouth shut.  Their story is equal parts romance and mystery.  The other characters are both useful and welcome, each bringing their own unique aspect to the mix.  The dark pasts of both Raphael and Elena are explored to some degree but not entirely.  I cannot fault the author much because what we learn about each is just enough.  Also, a sequel is to be released next year; hence, I hope to learn more each character in the next book.

Angels’ Blood was one of those books I did not want to end.  I was sad to finish it so quickly.  The teaser for the next book did not fulfill my need as a continuation of the story.  I want more!
